Newborn Sessions-

Welcoming a newborn into your family is a beautiful and transformative experience. Having each of my babies changed me in more ways than any other event in my lifetime. As a Richmond, Virginia Newborn Photographer, I have the privilege of capturing these precious early moments. To help you make the most of your newborn photography session, I’ve put together some tips to ensure you’re well-prepared and relaxed. Here’s how to get ready for your newborn session!

1. Choose the Right Time

Timing is key for newborn photography. Ideally, sessions are scheduled within the first two weeks of your baby’s life when they’re still sleepy and flexible. However, I know that childbirth or adoption (or however you bring in a new one to your life) is never clearcut. If you are not feeling up to a newborn session, wait until you feel ready. I have photographed “newborns” as old as three months. It looks a little different, but the most important thing is that you as the parent feel ready to be actively in the photos. YOU are key to this experience that I give. The photos I look back on as a kid and cherish the most are those that include those I love and are not of just me. I’m a firm believer that we take these photos not just so we can remember our children, but so that they can remember us! If you’re expecting or planning on having a new little one join your family, reach out early to secure your spot on my calendar!

2. Plan for Comfort

Your home will be the backdrop for our session, so ensure the environment is comfortable. As a Richmond Newborn Photographer, I know that the weather here can be all over the place. Here are some tips:

  • Temperature: Keep the room warm and cozy. Newborns can get cold easily, so a comfortable environment helps them stay relaxed.
  • Lighting: Natural light is ideal! Open curtains and blinds to let in soft, diffused light, but avoid direct sunlight.

3. Select Outfits Wisely

While I’ll focus on capturing the essence of your family, choosing the right outfits can enhance the overall aesthetic and feeling:

  • Baby’s Attire: Simple, neutral colors or soft pastels work best. Consider outfits that are easy to remove, as we might want to capture them in just a diaper or swaddle. Make sure that the outfits fit. Honestly, my favorite outfit for a newborn to wear is just their skin and cute diaper cover. Their bodies are just too good to cover!
  • Parents’ Outfits: Coordinate without being too matchy. Earthy tones or soft fabrics complement the natural vibe of lifestyle photography. I love helping my clients plan their wardrobe, so please feel free to reach out! I also have a small client wardrobe, so if you live in the Richmond area, you are welcome to come to my home before your session to try on a few dresses. Or I can bring a few options to you!

4. Gather Props and Sentimental Items

Incorporating meaningful items can add a personal touch to your photos. Think about:

  • Blankets or Swaddles: Soft textures can create beautiful layers.
  • Family Heirlooms: Items like a favorite toy or a special blanket can make the session feel even more intimate.
  • Books or Art: If you have favorite children’s books or artwork, consider displaying them in the background.

5. Timing and Feeding

Newborns thrive on a schedule, so plan your session around their feeding and napping times. Here are a few tips:

  • Feed Before the Session: A well-fed baby is usually a happy baby. Try to feed your little one just before our session begins.
  • Plan for Breaks: We’ll likely take breaks for soothing, feeding, or diaper changes, so don’t worry if we need to pause.
  • Consider Bathing the Baby Before the Session: I have found that often giving the baby a bath first before feeding them tires them even more. I don’t mind an awake baby in our session, but there is also something special about a sleeping newborn in photos!

6. Keep It Relaxed

A relaxed atmosphere makes for the best photos. Here are ways to keep things calm:

  • Have a Plan but Be Flexible: While it’s good to have a loose plan, babies can be unpredictable. Embrace the moment and let your little one lead the way!
  • Breathe and Enjoy: Take a deep breath, savor the moment, and enjoy this special time with your newborn. I have never had a kid or baby ruin a session. If you just sit back and enjoy it and trust it (even if it seems impossible), the photos will turn out better than you could ever imagine!

7. Don’t Forget About Siblings and Pets

If you have older siblings or pets, involve them in the session! Here’s how:

  • Sibling Interaction: Let them be part of the session, but prepare them with a few fun activities or a favorite toy to keep them engaged. I don’t expect them to be involved in the entire session and that is the beauty of at-home photography. They can take breaks, eat snacks, play in their room and come and enjoy photos whenever they want.
  • Pet Participation: If your furry family members are included, plan for their comfort and safety, and have a helper on hand if needed.
